First step to scent control is either purchasing scent lok clothing, or buying scent blocker kit. Scent lok gear is very expensive but more effective. I personally dont have the money so I just re-wash and prep my gear every season. * wash everything from head to toe that you are going to wear on your hunt with natural scent laundry detergent. * Place into drier with natural / earth scent drier sheet. * After dried, place into scent resistant container or bag to prevent you gear from becoming contaminated with other odors.
Your gear.
Are you going to hunt in a tree stand? A ground blind? from the ground? Spot and stalk? I prefer a self climbing tree stand. This gives you the option to get off the regular trail and find a tree/spot for just you. Plus deer movement change all the time! * Its alway a good idea to bring a grunt call and rattling horns out with you. This way if you hear a buck or see one but he's not in range. That call my bring'em in your lap. *Durring the rut bucks will fight or sparr over doe's and territory. So if its been a while and no action grab your antlers and mock a fight. It may bring in that trophy you've been waiting for. * when i walk in the woods espically durring the rut tie a string around your ancle with a cloth or something absorbant at the end. Put a few drops of doe in heat urine on it. You never know who will follow your tracks later that day!!!
I cant say it enough, i know its cold, and might not be that exciting at time but STAY STILL!!!! You may sit like a statue for 4 hours and not see a thing but at least you know it wasnt because they saw you before you saw them!!! * I have a sport ear that i wear it lets you hear things in the woods you would nomally miss. A distant grunt, a twig snap, try one out they are pretty neat!!! * I carry a doe call especially durring the rut when the bucks are chasing does after an hour or two blast out a blea call then wait and see if any bucks take the bait!!!
*My friend uses a decoy doe and he said every year he see's 4-5 bucks come out to check it out!!! It might just be good luck for him but you dont know unless you try. I would but im too lazy to carry out a decoy and worry about someone shooting it to the grass!
