THE STORY
FIGJAM is a street wear clothing company designed to symbolize and embody the culture of action sport. Our primary goal, here at FIGJAM, is to successfully represent the culture of those individuals who share the same characteristics and passion for the action sport world.
We at FIGJAM believe that there are some undeniable similarities between the personalities of those who skateboard, snowboard, surf, wake or ski – they are all part of this dynamic culture of action sports. Yes, these sports all maintain their particularities and differences, but in essence, at the core of this industry, we believe that these sports all share one thing in common – the same culture.
Definition of Culture: The behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a particular social group.
We partake and identify with a culture that sets its own rules, follows no establishment, creates through individualism and exudes confidence through actions. In addition each of these sports is a form of art that begins with the individuality of the person, but is portrayed and displayed to the community. Although our sports are composed of individualism we are all part of the same community within the same culture.
FIGJAM was created because we felt that the industry had not yet produced a brand which had achieved the task of embodying this culture we all live and breathe. The clothes we choose to wear is one of our most effective ways of advertising our beliefs and personality. FIGJAM, as a clothing company, represents this shared culture through our apparel.
We at FIGJAM cater to those who already see themselves as members of this culture; however we are also hoping to attract those who wish to be a part of this ever growing movement. FIGJAM is a strong supporter and believer in and of the growing influence of this culture.
Our Marketing Group targets the amateur skater, boarder, surfer, and wakeboarder because they are the foot soldiers of our culture and need to be consistently supported and encouraged if we hope to grow as a unit – This is why we at FIGJAM have created a dedicated ‘Marketing Group’ whose sole purpose is the promotion of the action sport culture and those who best represent it.
Remember “it’s your way of life”
Company History
In the winter of 2005, a group of young adventurous individuals set out on a trip that would unknowingly end up being the creation of FIGJAM Apparel. The thrill seekers attempted to pack in a mere 3000 kilometres that would take them from Kicking Horse, Golden to Vancouver B.C, all in a matter of 5 days.
During those 5 days, the group reflected on their dreams and goals in life with the assistance of a few après ski beverages. With sights set as high as possible, the guys decided that it was time they needed to do something new; something that brought a fresh perspective on life, something that reflected theirs and so many others way of life. No longer would they be defined by something other then themselves.
Since those very first nights on the cross province ski trip, FIGJAM has come a long way. Starting off with hand drawn sketches and many hours of screen printing in a garage to a full on clothing production line. The evolution of FIGJAM is pushing forward and the party is growing bigger by the day. The FIGJAM’s community continues to grow. Come join the party!

ALEX VAIU - ARTIST AND DESIGNER
I hear you just started _ Emily Carr? How is it?
Yeah, it’s been pretty sweet so far, definitely a big change from UVic, but a good change non-the less. The campus is nice and small, great location right on Granville Island, can’t complain, I’m really excited to be here.
Is it as intense as you imagined it to be?
It’s for sure pushing me, I mean I’ve heard so many different perspectives about the school before coming here. In the end, I just went in with my own expectations that it was going to be different and challenging and its been working out quite well; working hard but I like what I’m doing.
You moved from Toronto to Victoria and now Vancouver to attend Emily Carr, how do you like Vancouver?
I guess the simplest way to put it is I have the best of both worlds. I love the city aspect of Toronto but I also love the simplicity and “chillness” of Victoria. I feel Vancouver is a good mix of the two. Plus, I’m closer to the mountains, which is obviously a big plus.
Last season you where a big part of designing FIGJAM’s line. People loved your work, they loved how it portrayed the FIGJAM brand, and the culture through an artistic way- what can we expect this time around? Any surprises?
I want to try and push myself a little more this time around by paying more attention to the detail of the design, how it speaks to the community and how they may relate to it. I want to continue to explore the meaning of the FIGJAM brand and how it connects with those who wear the product. In the end, the design/product must be unmistakably, FIGJAM. The surprise it . . . more good sh*t to come.
Where do you see the industry trends heading?
Personally, I think companies are going to keep pushing forward towards connecting with the lifestyle of their specific target markets. I also think that people take their time shopping searching for what’s unique to them; companies will be focusing more on the detailing and intriguing graphics.
Any big plans for the future?
Go with the flow…
Do you have a website you want people to check out?
I’m currently updating it so it will be ready pretty soon.

JOEL LIBIN - ARTIST AND DESIGNER
MUGSHOT
My name is Joel Libin and my art studio is located in Vancouver’s downtown east-side, inside the Dynamo Arts Association building. I have been an avid drawer from youth, but having a studio allows for greater exploration into painting. Also, being a member of Basic Inquiry’s Centre for Figurative Arts has expanded my casual love of drawing into an explorative process of sampling different line, medium and media. This combination of these aforementioned spaces has spurred a process of converting my life-drawings into paintings. I feel that I am very explorative and spontaneous when involved in a figure study and try to instill a similar technique and effort when painting. As a more serious artistic intent began in 2005,
i choose people as my subjects for artistic representation because I enjoy being able to relate to visible projections of life that may be evident in a pose. Though I use the real moment of a live pose as a base, the freedom of expression, open choice for composition and manipulation changes the subject into a cognitive emotional response. I find unfinished lines in a drawn study can allow for unintended and open representation, directing my artistic intent. Though I paint and draw what I see, it is the process that attracts me to art, because within the process I can openly feel.
My paintings are created by a series of thoughts and words controlling the next choice of colour, the next movement and the next addition of media. I love the action of uncertain creation; uninhibited freedom, removal of responsibility and the risk to change my artistic process.

Callum Schuster - ARTIST AND DESIGNER
Born in Toronto in 1989, drawing and painting has been my passion since I was a little kid. I currently go to University at the Ontario College of Art and Design. Most of my work reflects my interests in cultural, social, political, economic and ecological issues. I describe the issues of today through various styles, methods and mediums appropriate to my ideas and observations.
FIGJAM believes to support the culture of action sport, you need to support the people on the front lines, and promote what they are doing! We are always looking for dedicated athletes in the action sport industry who fit our brand. That our sports are an art form.
