New York City + Modern African rhythms = African Soul Jam, the FUN side of Africa.
African Soul Jam was started by music lovers who felt something lacking in the citys nightlife scene: Africas scintillating dance rhythms. Since 2009, we have organized events that strive to make African music a staple part of New Yorks entertainment.
Our parties are multicultural social mixers where world music and African music lovers converge. However, we welcome ALL partygoers, regardless of ethnic background or music taste. Live DJs blend top-40 jams in popular African genres like Makossa, Highlife, Afrobeat, Soukous, Coupé-Décalé, Hiplife, Bongo flava, Kwaito, Naija, Mbalax, Ethiosoul, and Colazouk, as well as world hit music. You won't hear this rhythmic mix anywhere else in the city!
Mainstream media broadcasts too many negative images of Africa. Music and dance are just two of the many positive, creative things the continent has to offer. Since African club hits are rarely featured on U.S. airwaves, many Americans are unfamiliar with them. Some might even wonder why MTV recently organized African Music Awards, second year running. It's no surprise to us at African Soul Jam. For decades, Africa has produced award-winning music icons with stellar global appeal. Some of them are even considered amongst the top 100 most influential entertainers in the world.
You have probably heard bthe the buzz about legendary Fela Kuti, because of the Fela musical or the Afrobeat revival scene. Contemporary African music is so much more diverse, though. In addition to traditional African beats, African club music has also been influenced by various popular music genres from the Americas including Hiphop, Dance, Soul, Reggae, House, Rumba, Funk, Zouk, Jazz, and Pop – verse versa.
Unfamiliar with modern African music? Imagine beats that get your head nodding, your hips swaying, and your feet tapping, even if you dont understand what the lyrics mean!
Some African artists you might or might not know about include Manu Dibango, Brenda Fassie, Koffi Olomide, A.B.Crentsil, Mory Kante, Youssou N'Dour, Angelique Kidjo, Samini, Femi Kuti, Magic System, P-Square, Awilo Longomba, Arthur Makafote, and Mokobé. African Soul Jam exposes partygoers to these and MANY more.
If youre looking for a vibe different from the run-of-the-mill New York club scene, African Soul Jam is for you. Come to our next party to mingle and listen to music that will have you running for the dance floor!
