Eighth grade art is a required twelve week course of study. The students will engage in visual art (drawing, painting, ceramics) using a variety of art media and visual culture (art in the world around us everyday). The elements of art will be reviewed and incorporated into the projects along with the principles of design. Art history is incorporated into each project. Careers in art and how they are integrated into today's world are discussed in the course as well.
Middle school physical education emphasizes both health-related and skill related fitness. Psychomotor skills continue to be developed and refined through: 1) participation in a variety of individual, dual and team sports; 2) rhythmic activities; 3) fitness activities; and 4) lifetime recreational activities. This coeducational course addresses the application of rules and strategies, sportsmanship, and cooperative skills. Ongoing assessment includes both written and performance-based skill evaluations.
The foreign language exploration (FLEX) course provides students with language--speaking and writing experiences in Spanish, French, and Japanese. Also, through exposure to the cultures of the countries where these languages are spoken, students will be able to appreciate the similarities and differences between these cultures and our own culture. The course also provides a basis for deciding which foreign language students might pursue in high school and beyond.
Middle school health education provides for the continued development of attitudes and behaviors related to becoming a health-literate individual. This course focuses on skills and skill applications that assist students in building competencies for health literacy. These may include decision-making skills, stress management skills, communication skills, social skills and assertiveness skills. The middle school student has instructional opportunities to investigate how health behaviors impact health, well-being, and disease prevention and to accept personal responsibility for health-related decisions.
This is an introductory activity-based course in which students are introduced to the importance of technology and the principles used to develop, produce, use, and assess it. The students develop both individual and group abilities needed to participate in and contribute to society with an emphases on communication and transportation.
